Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has refuted claims that his client escaped from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody in Abuja.
Responding to reports of Kanu’s alleged escape, Ejimakor told newsmen, “It’s not true. I will be visiting him today by 2:00 pm. Kanu is a responsible and courageous freedom fighter and he is determined to stay put to fight the injustice within the system, not outside of it. He is too big to contemplate the option of escaping.”
The denials follow a report that surfaced on Thursday claiming Kanu had fled DSS detention along with his case file. The report, titled “Breaking News: Nnamdi Kanu Escapes from DSS Custody with Case File,” suggested that Kanu’s escape involved detailed planning and possibly insider assistance.
Attempts to reach DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya for comment were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or text messages.
Kanu, a controversial figure in Nigerian politics, has been in DSS custody facing charges related to his activities with IPOB, a group advocating for the secession of Biafra from Nigeria.
