The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its planned nationwide protest against the recent 50% hike in telecom tariffs approved by the Federal Government.

The protest, which was initially announced due to concerns about the financial burden on Nigerians, will now be put on hold after a meeting with government officials on Monday night.

NLC President Joe Ajaero, speaking after the meeting, revealed that the government had agreed to form a larger committee to review the entire telecom tariff structure. The committee will consist of five representatives from both sides and is expected to submit its findings within two weeks.

Ajaero emphasized that the NLC, as the largest organization in Africa, should not be excluded from consultations on such critical issues. He noted that the committee would aim for a fair and inclusive agreement, examining the tariff structure comprehensively.

While the symbolic action of submitting protest letters is postponed, Ajaero warned that the NLC’s next course of action, which could include protests, boycotts, or service withdrawals, would depend on the outcome of the committee’s review.

The NLC also raised concerns about other unresolved economic issues, such as high electricity tariffs and burdensome taxes on workers, which they are pushing for immediate resolution.
