The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for nationwide peaceful processions in solidarity with its President, Joe Ajaero, who is set to appear at the Force Headquarters today following a police summons over allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.
Leaders from industrial unions, civil society allies, and some lawyers are expected to accompany Ajaero to the police headquarters. The NLC has instructed its state councils to mobilize members for peaceful processions to state police commands, where prayer sessions will be held.
NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja stated, “In response to the recent summons…we call on all NLC affiliates and state councils to mobilize their members in Abuja and across the states to show solidarity.” He emphasized the peaceful nature of the protests and warned that if Ajaero is detained, all workers nationwide would proceed on an indefinite strike.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has also urged its FCT chapter to rally Abuja-based journalists in support of Ajaero and the NLC. Meanwhile, the UK Trade Union Congress (TUC) has urged the British government to press Nigeria to cease what it calls violent repression and intimidation of trade unions.
