The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) announced plans to launch a more accessible e-visa application channel for short visits, aligning with the Nigeria Visa Policy 2020.

The initiative aims to streamline visa processes, attract foreign direct investments (FDIs), and boost tourism.

The announcement was made by NIS Comptroller General Kemi Nandap during a speech at the graduation ceremony of the 12th Command Course at the Immigration Command and Staff College in Sokoto. Represented by Assistant Comptroller General George Didel, Nandap emphasized the need for efficient visa processes to enhance Nigeria’s appeal to international visitors.

“We must embrace these reforms and implement effective internal control and monitoring mechanisms to track the presence and activities of all foreigners in Nigeria,” Nandap stated.

The new e-visa channel is part of a broader strategy to modernize Nigeria’s immigration processes. This includes the full implementation of the e-Border Project, the installation of e-gates at international airports in Lagos and Abuja, and the integration of the Advance Passenger Information System (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR). “These measures will enhance border control and clearance systems and improve intelligence sharing and operational coordination for national security,” she added.

Nandap also highlighted ongoing efforts to automate passport application processes to reduce human interaction, curtail malpractice, and improve efficiency. The rollout of enhanced e-passports will continue domestically and at foreign missions until full transition is achieved.

In addition to technology upgrades, Nandap called for revitalizing NIS’s divisional offices and improving participation in Security Council meetings at state and local levels. “We must ensure active participation in nationwide sensitization campaigns against irregular migration, especially the smuggling of migrants (SOM),” she emphasized.

Nandap reiterated NIS’s commitment to capacity-building, professional standards, and improving the welfare of officers, including timely promotions, affordable housing, and healthcare schemes. She urged the course graduates to be “agents of transformation” and maintain the highest standards of professionalism.

The graduation event concluded with the awarding of the “Passed Command Course” (PCC) certificates and the “Dagger Merit Award (+)” to participants in recognition of their dedication and hard work.
