The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has introduced a digital passport system, allowing Nigerians in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries to renew their passports online, beginning November 1, 2024.
This new contactless system aims to minimize the need for in-person visits to NIS offices, offering a more accessible and efficient process for Nigerians living abroad.
In a video shared on its official X account (formerly Twitter), the NIS outlined the expansion plan. After the initial rollout in Canada, the service will extend to the United Kingdom, the United States, and Italy by November 15, followed by Nigeria and other global locations on December 1.
“In its continued effort to serve the Nigerian public more efficiently and create a functional system that meets global standards, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a new contactless issuance process starting from November 1st, 2024,” the NIS announced.
Nigerians abroad will be able to renew their passports through an NIS mobile app available on Google Play, the App Store, and the Windows Store, allowing them to complete the renewal process from home. Though not yet accessible on these platforms, the app will be available for download in Canada starting November 1.
