The national power grid in Nigeria has recorded its first major collapse of 2025, plunging the country into a nationwide blackout just ten days into the new year.

This latest disruption marks the 13th grid collapse within the past 13 months, adding to the growing frustrations of citizens over the country’s fragile energy infrastructure.

Reports indicate a drastic decline in power generation, dropping from 2,111.01 megawatts at 2:00 p.m. to a meager 390.20 megawatts by 3:00 p.m., according to checks by our correspondent.

The incident was confirmed by The Energy Podcast, which stated in a post, “National grid suffers major collapse… First in 2025.” Another update from the platform added, “Restoration has begun… Currently generating 302MW as of 02:40 p.m.”

Efforts are reportedly underway to restore power, though details on the cause of the collapse remain scarce. This recurring issue highlights the critical need for sustainable reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.

Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
