Nigerian-born British actress Cynthia Erivo has been cast in the lead role of Jesus in the upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl.
The Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award-winning actress, who is also a three-time Oscar nominee, will star in the rock opera classic, which is set to run from August 1 to August 3. The announcement was made via the Hollywood Bowl’s official social media pages, highlighting Erivo’s remarkable achievements in the entertainment industry.
Originally written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jesus Christ Superstar reimagines the final days of Jesus Christ through the perspective of Judas Iscariot. The production explores the personal struggles and relationships between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, and the Roman authorities, with the story told entirely through song.
The Hollywood Bowl’s adaptation will be directed and choreographed by Colombian-American Sergio Trujillo, with Stephen Oremus serving as the musical director.
Since its Broadway debut in 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar has become one of the most celebrated rock operas in theater history, grossing over $237 million worldwide by 1980. The show held the record for the longest-running West End musical before being surpassed by Cats in 1989.
Erivo, known for her powerful performances on stage and screen, has continued to earn global recognition since launching her career in 2011. Her casting as Jesus marks a bold and historic move in the ongoing legacy of Jesus Christ Superstar.
