Media personality Chude Jideonwo recently asserted that Nigeria’s most influential filmmakers primarily hail from the Yoruba ethnic group. In a post on Instagram, he highlighted prominent figures in the industry, including Toyin Abraham, Kemi Adetiba, Funke Akindele, Mo Abudu, Kunle Afolayan, and Femi Adebayo.
Jideonwo argued that Yoruba films dominate global streaming platforms, noting the minimal presence of Hausa and Igbo-language films. He questioned, “Can you name one Hausa or Igbo-language movie on Netflix or Amazon?” pointing out that mainstream cinema is largely shaped by Yoruba filmmakers.
He emphasized the cultural impact of Yoruba cinema, stating, “Most of the mainstream, big cinema, and streaming movies are all by Yoruba people.” Jideonwo believes that the Yoruba filming culture has significantly influenced the overall film landscape in Nigeria, merging with other groups to lead in production and visibility.
His remarks underscore the pivotal role that Yoruba filmmakers play in the Nigerian entertainment industry, establishing a robust presence that resonates both locally and globally.
