
The Nigerian capital Abuja was filled with pomp and excitement as 15-year-old Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, an autistic prodigy, received a Guinness World Record (GWR) certificate for the largest artwork ever created by an individual. His stunning masterpiece, which spans an incredible 12,303.87 square meters, earned him global recognition for his extraordinary feat.
The painting, titled “Impossibility is a Myth,” was created to raise awareness about autism and mental health. The unveiling event was attended by high-profile dignitaries, including the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hanatu Musawa, Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa, and other notable figures like the UN Deputy Secretary General and Director General of the National Art Gallery, Ahmed Bashir Sodangi.
Kanyeyachukwu made history on November 24, 2024, when he surpassed the previous world record of 9,632 square meters, leaving an indelible mark on the art world. Musawa praised the young artist, highlighting that his success is a testament to the boundless potential of Nigerian youth when provided with the right opportunities and guidance.
Chief of Defence Staff Musa, who was represented by Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, expressed that Kanyeyachukwu’s success underscores the importance of nurturing and supporting gifted individuals, particularly those with unique talents and challenges like autism.
The GWR adjudicator, Mr. Glenn Pollard, lauded the achievement, stating, “Kanyeyachukwu’s artwork is exceptional, and this record is a testament to his talent and dedication.”
UN Resident Coordinator Mohamed Fall, represented by UNICEF’s Cristian Munduate, also commended the young artist’s work as an “extraordinary masterpiece,” emphasizing that disability inclusion is a crucial component of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Fall added that for true societal progress, all individuals, regardless of ability, should be provided equal opportunities to contribute and reach their full potential.
