Nigeria has upgraded its passport production system to meet global standards, now capable of processing up to 5,000 passports daily.

According to Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, this new system is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which has cleared backlogs and ended long delays in passport processing.

Tunji-Ojo disclosed this while inspecting the new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the Nigeria Immigration Service headquarters in Abuja, stressing that Nigerians can now receive their approved passports within 24 hours of approval. “The era of backlogs and manual personalisation is over,” he said, highlighting increased speed, reliability, and strengthened document integrity.

Nigeria has joined countries like the United States, United Kingdom, France, and India in adopting advanced passport personalization technologies, ensuring quick turnaround, transparency, and global authentication.

The project was implemented through a partnership with IRIS Smart Technologies Ltd. without direct government funding.

The Minister commended Permanent Secretary Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Comptroller-General Mrs. Kemi Nandap, and other key officials for their contributions to the reform.

Nigerians are expected to benefit from an enhanced passport issuance process, which balances speed, security, and international standards, thus improving travelers’ experience.
