The Senate of Nigeria has formally confirmed the appointment of all 64 ambassadorial nominees presented by President Bola Tinubu, filling critical vacancies in the nation’s diplomatic missions abroad.
This blanket confirmation concludes a screening process led by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which had earlier evaluated the candidates over several days.
The list comprised a mix of career diplomats and non-career nominees, including several high-profile political figures. During the committee hearings, a parliamentary tradition was observed where many of the prominent non-career nominees, such as former ministers and politicians, were asked to symbolically “take a bow and go” as a gesture of respect, foregoing rigorous public questioning.
With the Senate’s final approval, the Federal Government can now proceed to deploy these ambassadors to their respective posts.
This move is seen as a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s foreign relations and ensuring its global representation is fully operational after a period of having many key embassies without substantive heads.
The confirmation allows President Tinubu’s administration to position its chosen envoys across the world, where they will be tasked with advancing Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic, and strategic interests on the international stage.
