The Nigeria Police Force has successfully dismantled a cartel involved in the sale of jewellery worth billions of Naira, obtained through armed robberies in Abuja and surrounding areas.
Police spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the cartel’s activities came to light following an armed robbery on April 28, 2024, at the residence of a police officer in Lugbe, Federal Capital Territory. During the incident, the officer was nearly suffocated, and a secured safe containing jewellery, money, academic certificates, and other valuables was stolen.
“CCTV footage from the scene has been instrumental in our forensic investigation,” Adejobi stated. Investigations traced the stolen items to Wuse Market, where they were allegedly purchased by one Alhaji Auwal. Despite prior warnings, Auwal continued to engage in buying the stolen jewellery, advising his associates on handling the items.
The cartel, which includes Auwal, his sons, and other associates, has been linked to similar cases under investigation across the FCT. Currently, 26 suspects have been detained legally and will be charged upon conclusion of investigations.
Contrary to rumors, Adejobi clarified that no robbery or theft occurred at the residence of the Inspector General of Police. He emphasized, “Those alleging a robbery at the IGP’s residence clearly misunderstand the security measures in place. Such breaches are impossible.”
The police reiterated their commitment to justice and urged the public to disregard misleading reports aimed at undermining the Force’s reputation.
