In response to the rising fuel costs, the Nigerian Federal Government has initiated the conversion of 150 commercial vehicles to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Kaduna State. The conversion, which is free of charge, is part of a larger plan to distribute 10,000 conversion kits across the state to help lower transportation costs.
According to Thomos Ayu, the coordinator of the initiative, the installation of CNG kits will take place in Zaria, Peugeot Kakuri, and Royal Energies in Kakau. The initiative is aimed at equipping the commercial transport sector with CNG, which is a cheaper and more abundant alternative to petrol.
Dauda Suleiman, Team Lead for the CNG initiative, highlighted that CNG is not only cheaper but also more efficient, with lower maintenance costs compared to petrol. Currently, CNG costs N230 per kilogram in Abuja and N455 in Kaduna, offering a cost-effective solution for commercial transport.
The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Zaria, Comrade Lawal Abdullahi, praised the government’s efforts to ease the burden on transporters through the initiative.
