Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi, a Nigerian-born clinical associate professor of medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland, has been elected as the President of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).
The CMA, in a statement on its website, announced Ogunyemi’s victory in an election held from November 20 to December 4, 2024. Ogunyemi, a practicing medical dermatologist in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and visiting specialist in Labrador City since 2018, competed against Dr. Susan MacDonald, a notable advocate for palliative care.
Reflecting on his election, Ogunyemi highlighted his extensive experience in medical leadership.
“My 15 years in medical leadership have given me valuable insights into the challenges facing our healthcare system. As CMA president-elect, I will advocate for a unified profession, a robust healthcare system, and healthier communities,” Ogunyemi said.
Pending ratification at the CMA’s Annual General Meeting in May 2025, Ogunyemi will serve as President-elect before officially taking over as President in May 2026 for a one-year term.
Ogunyemi’s election is seen as a significant milestone for diversity in Canadian healthcare leadership, reflecting the global impact of Nigerian professionals.
