The Nigerian Army has deployed 177 soldiers to Guinea-Bissau to assist in restoring peace and stability in the West African nation.

The Chief of Army Operations, Major General Boniface Sinjen, announced this deployment at the graduation ceremony for the troops of the Nigerian company 3 ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission at the General Martin-Luther Agwai Peacekeeping Centre in Jaji, Kaduna State, on Wednesday.

General Sinjen stated that Guinea-Bissau is currently grappling with political instability and institutional crises that pose significant threats to peace and sustainable development in the region. The deployment reflects Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the government of Guinea-Bissau in consolidating its authority, addressing security challenges, and fostering democratic governance.

“This deployment is in line with the mission’s mandate, which has been extended several times to consolidate the relative peace and stability in the country,” Sinjen remarked. He emphasized that the troops have undergone rigorous Pre-Deployment Training (PDT), equipping them with the tactical skills necessary for the mission.

Sinjen cautioned the troops to maintain professionalism, adhere to mission guidelines, and respect the sovereignty and cultural sensitivities of Guinea-Bissau. “You will be operating in a complex environment where various ethnic groups coexist. I implore you to uphold the highest standards of conduct, respect for human rights, and the sovereignty of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau,” he advised.

He also reiterated the Nigerian Army’s zero-tolerance policy on sexual exploitation, drug trafficking, and abuse, warning that any personnel found guilty would face severe consequences. “Your behavior will reflect on the nation’s image, so uphold the highest standards of discipline and integrity,” he added.

The Commandant of the Martin-Luther Agwai Peacekeeping Centre, Major General Ademola Adedoja, highlighted that the training, which began on May 19, was tailored to prepare the troops for contemporary peacekeeping challenges specific to Guinea-Bissau. The training included lectures and field exercises focusing on the unique security issues in the region.

“As you embark on this critical mission, carry the spirit of excellence with you. Your contribution will be instrumental in shaping the future of Guinea-Bissau and promoting peace and stability in West Africa,” Adedoja stated.
