The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has assured the public of the safety and security of the Nigerian airspace, countering recent online claims of inadequate radar coverage. Acting Director-General, Capt. Chris Najomo, affirmed in a statement on Monday that the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has comprehensive radar oversight across the nation.
“In furtherance to this, the NCAA investigated two recent cases of violations of the prohibited flight zones (DNP4) in Abuja… and established that both violations comprised controlled flights in controlled airspace, but strayed into restricted airspace as a result of adverse weather,” Najomo said. He confirmed that NAMA possesses complete radar data for these incidents, thanks to functional surveillance radars in Abuja, Kano, Lagos, and Port Harcourt.
To enhance coverage, Nigeria is augmenting its aviation infrastructure with five additional Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) stations in Obubbra, Ilorin, Talata Mafara, Maiduguri, and Numan, aiming for full national radar coverage.
