
Nigeria has secured two silver medals at the 2024 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO), which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The medals were won by Elvis Chiedozie Ekwelem from Rivers State and Oghenerukevwe Patrick Esemitodje from Lagos State, showcasing Nigeria’s strong presence in the annual continental mathematics contest.
The event brought together young mathematicians from over 20 African countries, with an additional eight nations participating virtually.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Witwatersrand, Prof. Zeblon Vilakazi, who hosted the competition, praised the Nigerian students for their intellectual rigor, dedication, and talent. He emphasized that the competition aims to foster academic excellence and research among young African mathematicians.
Prof. Vilakazi further highlighted that the outstanding performance of the Nigerian contingent reflects their deep understanding of mathematics and their eagerness to excel at a continental level. These students are seen as bright prospects for the future of mathematics in Africa.
