Lt. Changfe Maigari has etched her name in the annals of history as the Nigerian Navy’s first female pilot since its establishment in 1964.
Hailing from Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State and born in Kaduna, Maigari’s groundbreaking achievement is the result of years of perseverance, discipline, and dedication.
Her journey began in 2016 when she graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as a Sub Lieutenant and joined the Navy as part of the first group of 20 female regular cadets trained at the academy. She also emerged as the Best Graduating Cadet in Academics and earned the prestigious Gold Medal Navy Award.
Speaking during her recognition at the 2024 Nigerian Navy Ceremonial Sunset held at the Naval Training Command Headquarters in Ebube-Eleme, Rivers State, Maigari recounted her inspiring journey.
“Growing up in a military environment as the daughter of an Air Force officer, I aspired from an early age to become a military pilot,” Maigari said.
After graduating from the NDA, Maigari served aboard the Nigerian Navy Ship Unity and later excelled in her Sub Lieutenant Technical Course in 2019, where she emerged as the overall best. Despite the challenges faced during her rigorous training, Maigari successfully completed her basic pilot training and fulfilled all requirements to earn her pilot wings.
“Becoming the first female pilot in the Nigerian Navy feels surreal and is a significant milestone for me and my female colleagues who can draw inspiration from this achievement,” she said.
Maigari also expressed hope that her success would inspire young girls, both civilian and aspiring military personnel, to pursue their dreams relentlessly. “Perseverance can overcome any challenge in life,” she advised.
Grateful for the unwavering support of her family, colleagues, and God, Maigari dedicated her accomplishment to them, acknowledging their role in helping her achieve this historic feat.
Her story is a beacon of hope for women in the military and a testament to the power of determination and resilience.
