The Nigerian government has officially endorsed Dr. Olufemi Elias as the country’s candidate for the upcoming 2026 election into the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, made the announcement during a courtesy visit by Elias to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. She reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to securing a seat on the 15-member ICJ and pledged the government’s full support for Elias’ candidacy.
Ojukwu highlighted Elias’ extensive experience in international law and governance, describing him as a highly qualified jurist with a strong track record in the United Nations system. She emphasized that his candidacy reflects Nigeria’s dedication to international justice, human rights, and the rule of law.
“With your background and vast experience, I have no doubt that you are well-positioned for this role. The ICJ must be made fit-for-purpose, especially considering ongoing global legal disputes,” Ojukwu stated.
Elias, an expert in public international law, expressed gratitude for the endorsement, pledging to uphold Nigeria’s reputation if elected. He noted that he has devoted over 25 years to international legal service, including roles as a judge at the Islamic Development Bank Administrative Tribunal and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. He has also served as the registrar of the UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals and as a legal adviser at various global institutions.
Acknowledging the competitive nature of the election, Elias assured that Nigeria’s early start in the campaign would strengthen his chances. He also extended his appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting his bid.
The ICJ election is scheduled to take place in November 2026, and Nigeria is expected to intensify diplomatic efforts to rally support for Elias among member states.
