Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed concern that Nigeria may be gradually drifting towards a one-party state, warning that recent political developments could undermine the country’s democratic foundation.

Makinde made this known in a public statement, where he pointed to growing pressure on opposition voices and what he described as a shrinking democratic space. He noted that individuals who speak against such trends are increasingly facing challenges, while opposition parties appear to be weakening.

According to him, a healthy democracy depends on balance, credible alternatives, and strong institutions, stressing that the absence of these elements could erode accountability and effective governance.

The governor warned that the situation could lead to political apathy, with citizens losing confidence in the system and disengaging from participation.

Makinde, however, stated that the country has not reached a point of no return, urging leaders and citizens to remain actively involved in protecting democratic values and preserving a multiparty system.

He also indicated plans to engage stakeholders across different sectors to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure political inclusiveness.
