In a national address on October 1, 2024, marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu acknowledged the difficult times Nigerians are enduring but reassured citizens that the government is committed to finding lasting solutions to ease their economic challenges.

“We understand the struggles many of you face with rising living costs and the search for meaningful employment. Rest assured, your voices are heard,” Tinubu affirmed this in his early morning broadcast.

Highlighting the progress made since the country’s independence in 1960, Tinubu celebrated the nation’s resilience and unity despite past challenges, including the civil war. “Our nation has survived many crises that dissolved other countries. We have come a long way in holding Nigeria together,” he said.

The president emphasized that his administration’s reforms are already yielding positive results, including progress in the fight against terrorism and banditry. “We are winning the war on terror and banditry. Over 300 commanders of Boko Haram and bandits have been eliminated by our security forces,” Tinubu stated, adding that peace is gradually returning to troubled areas.

Tinubu also touched on ongoing efforts to stabilize the economy, reporting over $30 billion in foreign direct investments in the past year, while the administration continues to tackle the forex backlog and improve monetary policy. He expressed optimism that the economy will see further improvement as reforms take effect.

Acknowledging the high cost of living, Tinubu encouraged patience, noting that investments in agriculture and mechanized farming will drive food production and ultimately lower food prices. He also announced a series of youth-focused initiatives, including a 30-day National Youth Conference and the Renewed Hope Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP), which aims to create 2.5 million jobs annually.

“We lead today with the future in mind, ensuring that the next generation is at the forefront of our efforts,” Tinubu said, reaffirming the administration’s dedication to building a better and more prosperous Nigeria.

In conclusion, President Tinubu called for unity and optimism, urging citizens to believe in the country’s potential. “Better days are ahead. Together, we will forge a path toward a brighter future,” he declared.

The president also took the opportunity to announce the conferment of national honors on key public figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who will receive the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).

As Nigeria reflects on its past and looks to the future, Tinubu’s address served as both a call to action and a message of hope for all Nigerians.
