Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has firmly denied reports of a strained relationship with his deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, calling such claims unfounded. The governor’s statement comes amid swirling rumors that Garba had vacated his official residence and planned to resign over political disagreements.
The speculation gained traction after reports emerged of a dispute regarding the replacement of a consensus candidate for the upcoming Shiroro Local Government elections—Garba’s home constituency. However, the deputy governor’s office swiftly refuted the claims, with Press Secretary Ummikhultume Abdullahi confirming Garba remains in his official residence and has not resigned.
Observers noted unusually low activity around the deputy governor’s residence on Monday, fueling further speculation. Despite this, both leaders were seen together at a public event last week before Governor Bago traveled to Russia, during which Garba assumed temporary leadership of the state.
An anonymous source described the relationship as “cosmetic,” suggesting underlying tensions may still exist. However, no formal resignation has been submitted, and both officials continue to fulfill their duties. The administration, now nearly two years in office, has previously showcased a cooperative working dynamic between the two leaders.
As the situation develops, political analysts are watching for any signs of a breakdown in what has been publicly presented as a harmonious partnership. The state government maintains there is no truth to the resignation rumors, attributing them to social media misinformation.
