The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has launched an investigation into the case of Abdul Olatunji, a Nigerian reportedly detained in South Africa since 2019 without trial.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NiDCOM revealed that the matter had come to its attention following an appeal from Olatunji’s family, who accused South African authorities of fabricating charges against him.

“The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission’s (NiDCOM) attention has been drawn to this case, and we wish to state that immediate steps are being taken to address it,” the statement, signed by NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, read.

Diplomatic Efforts Begin

The commission disclosed that the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa had contacted the South African government to demand clarification. According to NiDCOM, its Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has also spoken directly with Olatunji’s brother to reassure the family of the Federal Government’s commitment to securing justice.

“We are working closely with the Nigerian Mission in South Africa to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out and that justice prevails,” the statement added.

Support from Diaspora Groups

The Nigerian Women’s Association in South Africa has also stepped in to provide moral support. The group’s president, Elizabeth Johnson, announced plans to visit the prison where Olatunji is being held, stating, “We are deeply concerned about this case and will continue to advocate for a fair resolution.”

Family Plea for Urgent Action

Olatunji’s family has described his detention as a result of “false and malicious charges orchestrated by South African officials” and called on the Nigerian government to intervene urgently.

NiDCOM clarified that the case was previously unreported to either the commission or the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa but emphasized that it is now a priority.

“NiDCOM assures that the matter will be thoroughly investigated to ensure justice and fairness,” the statement concluded.
