Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and first African to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO), has been re-elected for a second term as Director-General. The WTO’s General Council confirmed her reappointment on Friday, November 29, stating that her second term would commence on September 1, 2025, following the conclusion of her current tenure in August 2025.

Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, chair of the General Council, announced that no other nominations were received before the November 8 deadline, solidifying Okonjo-Iweala’s unopposed candidacy.

In a post on its verified X account, the WTO wrote, “Breaking: the General Council has appointed Director-General @NOIweala for a second term, effective 1 September 2025. More details to follow.”

Okonjo-Iweala, 70, had declared her intention to seek a second term in September, stating her continued commitment to reforming the WTO and addressing global trade challenges.

“I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me by WTO member states,” Okonjo-Iweala said in a statement. “I remain committed to working with all members to advance the multilateral trading system and address the pressing challenges of our time.”

Her first term, which began in March 2021, was marked by significant strides in reforming the organization, navigating global trade disruptions, and pushing for equitable access to trade opportunities.

The WTO’s Director-General is selected by consensus among its 166 member nations. Okonjo-Iweala’s initial appointment in 2021 was achieved despite initial challenges, showcasing her diplomatic acumen and widespread support.

Her leadership has been widely lauded for driving a reform agenda that aims to make the WTO more inclusive and responsive to global economic dynamics.
