The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved a 50% increase in telecom tariffs for MTN, Airtel, and other network operators in response to rising operational costs. This marks the first tariff adjustment since 2013.
Announcing the decision on Monday, the Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, said telecom operators had requested a much higher increase, exceeding 100%, citing economic pressures. However, the NCC capped the adjustment at 50% to balance industry sustainability with consumer affordability.
The commission stated that the new tariffs would still align with the 2013 NCC Cost Study and would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. It assured consumers that the adjustments would be implemented transparently, with network operators mandated to educate subscribers about the new rates.
While acknowledging public concerns about affordability, the NCC emphasized that the increase is necessary to address the widening gap between operational costs and service pricing. The adjustment is also expected to support infrastructure investment, improve network quality, and ensure continued service expansion across Nigeria.
