Economic activities across Nigeria have ground to a halt as the #EndBadGovernance protests kick off in multiple cities. From Abuja to Abeokuta, Port Harcourt to Lagos, banks, markets, and businesses have closed in response to the demonstrations.
Protesters, defying last-minute attempts by authorities to stop the protests, have taken to the streets to express their grievances over poor living conditions and bad governance.
In Kaduna, the usually bustling Ahmadu Bello Way is deserted, with banks and businesses shut down. Public transportation is operating at reduced capacity as many commuters stay indoors out of fear. Heavy security presence is reported in Sokoto and Damaturu, while in Bauchi, security personnel are stationed at the proposed protest venue to ensure safety.
In Kano, while some streets remain empty, protesters at the Zoo Road area chant “Mu yunwa muke ji” (“we are hungry”). In Lagos, protests are ongoing despite orders against street demonstrations. Protesters have gathered at Ikeja Underbridge and are marching towards Alausa, where security operatives have redirected them to Gani Fawehinmi Park.
In Abuja, around 50 protesters have assembled at the entrance of MKO Abiola Stadium. In Port Harcourt, demonstrators are reciting the old national anthem as a form of protest. The “Enough Is Enough” group, led by co-convener Deji Adeyanju, reports cooperation from security officials.
