For the second time in three days, Nigeria’s national power grid has collapsed, plunging large areas of the country into darkness. The Nigerian System Operator’s portal showed that power generation dropped to zero megawatts at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, affecting numerous power generation and distribution companies.

Electricity distributors quickly alerted customers about the outage, with Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) posting on X: “Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 07 November 2024, at 11:29Hrs affecting supply within our network. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”

Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) reported “a simultaneous loss of supply across our network” at 11:29 a.m., indicating a “potential system failure or collapse.” The company assured customers it was working with partners “for speedy restoration of the grid.”

In a statement on social media, Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) added: “The current outage being experienced within our franchise States is a result of loss of power supply from the national grid… occurring at about 11:28 a.m. today, Thursday, 7th November 2024.”

Although the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not commented on this latest incident, it attributed Tuesday’s outage to “a series of lines and generators trippings that caused instability of the grid.”

As grid failures become more frequent, the Federal Government has cited outdated equipment, inadequate infrastructure, and maintenance issues as primary challenges, promising steps to address Nigeria’s struggling power system.
