Residents of Beeston, a town in Nottinghamshire, England, are perplexed by the recurring appearance of plates filled with peeled bananas left at the same street corner on the second day of each month. The phenomenon, ongoing for over a year, has sparked curiosity and speculation within the local community.

The plates are consistently placed at the intersection of Abbey Road and Wensor Avenue, directly across from a local church. Clare Short, a resident, noticed the unusual pattern and observed that the bananas, often left to rot, create a mess.

In an attempt to address the issue, Short posted a sign at the location, stating: “Please, respectfully, no more bananas! The uncollected plates and rotting bananas leave such a mess. Wishing a happy new year to you all.” Despite her efforts, another plate of bananas appeared on January 2nd, 2025.

Short told the BBC that no one in the community seems to know who is behind the mysterious act. Theories range from the bananas being a gift for wildlife to a possible religious offering, given the proximity of the church.

While Short has expressed frustration with the cleanup, she has also come to accept the tradition. “I think it’s a special thing for [someone], and I wish them well. But if they could come back and clean up the mess a few days later, that would be lovely,” she said.

The mystery remains unsolved, leaving residents intrigued by this curious monthly ritual.
