The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed allegations by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) regarding the remand status of Ayomide Adeleye, a murder suspect.

In a recent publication, FIJ claimed that Adeleye, accused of murdering Christianah Idowu, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), had never been remanded for the charge.

Reacting to the report on X (formerly Twitter), Lagos Police Spokesman SP Benjamin Hundeyin described the claim as misinformation, clarifying that the FIJ had mistaken Adeleye for another individual with the same name.

“We can confirm that Ayomide Adeleye was charged with murder and was remanded for the same offense,” Hundeyin stated. “It is also a fact that another person bearing the same name was remanded for a different offense and released in April 2024, long before the Ayomide we are talking about committed his offense.”

Hundeyin further criticized the investigative body for relying on unverified sources rather than consulting the appropriate authorities. “An outfit that prides itself on investigation should live up to its name. Relying on ‘sources’ rather than the spokesperson of the Correctional Service would land you in this kind of misinformation,” he added.

The clarification comes amid ongoing public scrutiny of the high-profile murder case. Adeleye, a 200-level Philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ogun State, was apprehended by the Lagos State Police Command in September 2024 over the murder of Idowu.

The police emphasized that the individual released in April 2024 was involved in a separate, unrelated case.
