Muhammadu Sanusi II is poised to officially receive his appointment letter as the Emir of Kano, Nigeria, just one day after being reinstated to the position. Traditional rulers, kingmakers, and other dignitaries have gathered at the Art Chamber of the Kano State Government House for the event.
Sanusi’s reinstatement comes after Governor Yusuf signed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law, overturning the previous law enacted by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. The 2019 law had split the Kano Emirate into five separate entities—Karaye, Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Kano—and led to Sanusi’s deposition on March 9, 2020.
The new law dissolves these additional emirate councils, reinstating the traditional singular Kano Emirate. Sanusi, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was previously known as Lamido Sanusi before ascending to the throne.
As the ceremony unfolds, Sanusi is already present at the venue, marking his return to the esteemed position he held until four years ago.
