The father of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has filed a legal challenge against the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) over its advice that led to the release of four prime suspects in his son’s controversial death.
Aloba Joseph, through his lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Wahab Shittu, submitted an application to the Lagos High Court in Ikeja, seeking a judicial review to overturn the DPP’s legal advice. He argues that the decision preempted the ongoing Coroner’s inquest into Mohbad’s death, thereby obstructing due process.
The suspects—music executive Abdulazeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, socialite Samson Balogun Eletu (Sam Larry), Owodunni Ibrahim (Prime Boy), and Opere Babatunde—were discharged and acquitted by a Magistrate Court on February 26, 2025, following the DPP’s legal recommendation.
In his court documents, Aloba contends that the Coroner’s inquest, which began on September 23, 2023, has yet to conclude, and those released have been implicated in the proceedings. He claims the DPP’s action undermines the integrity of the ongoing investigation and could compromise justice for his son’s death.
Aloba is urging the court to quash the legal advice, citing a lack of fair hearing and jurisdictional overreach. No judge has been assigned to the case yet, and a hearing date is yet to be fixed.
