Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has called for a detailed technical report from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) following the Super Eagles’ disappointing performance during the recent FIFA window.
The Super Eagles secured only one point from their matches, drawing 1-1 with South Africa in Uyo and losing 2-1 to Benin Republic in Abidjan. These results leave them with just three points out of a possible twelve in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.
Expressing his dissatisfaction, Enoh criticized the team’s performance given the significant support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and the positive relationship between the Ministry and the NFF. “The recent results are unacceptable,” stated Senator Enoh. “Despite the immense backing from President Tinubu and the high expectations of Nigerian football fans, the Super Eagles have underperformed.”
He emphasized the need for accountability and answers from the NFF. “Our supporters are passionate and devoted,” Enoh added. “They deserve an explanation for why our national team has not been performing to the expected standards.”
The Minister’s demand reflects a broader concern among fans and officials about the national team’s future and their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The NFF is now expected to provide a comprehensive technical report detailing the reasons for the poor performance and addressing the way forward.
