The Nigerian military has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, stating that he is currently in hiding and under constant surveillance.
Speaking on Channels TV’s The Morning Brief on Monday, February 24, 2025, the Chief of Defence Operations, Major General Emeka Onumajuru, assured Nigerians that the armed forces are closely monitoring Turji’s movements and will soon neutralize him.
“There is absolutely no back and forth between Bello Turji and the armed forces. As I speak, he is completely in hiding, and the military is tracking him. Very soon, he will be eliminated,” Onumajuru stated.
He urged Nigerians to remain patient, explaining that tracking high-profile criminals requires time and precision. He also reassured residents of the Northwestern region that Turji’s reign of terror would soon come to an end.
Reacting to claims by Sokoto lawmaker Aminu Almustapha Boza that Turji has been extorting residents of Sabon Birni Local Government Area by imposing taxes, Onumajuru encouraged the affected communities to resist such demands.
“The armed forces are here to protect you. I urge communities not to give in to any request for protection levies. Our troops are on the ground to ensure your safety and allow you to go about your daily activities without fear,” he added.
The military’s intensified crackdown on banditry comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in the region, with authorities promising decisive action against criminal elements.
