The Nigerian Armed Forces has officially retired 656 senior non-commissioned officers (SNCOs) after 35 years of active service. The retirees, drawn from the Nigerian Army (NA), Navy (NN), Air Force (NAF), and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), were disengaged at a ceremony held on Thursday at the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC), Oshodi.

The retirement event followed a six-month demilitarization training aimed at equipping the personnel with skills for a smooth transition into civilian life. The retirees included 535 Army soldiers, 86 Navy personnel, 35 Air Force officers, and two Defence Intelligence officers.

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubarkar, commended the retirees for their years of service and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria. He praised their resilience, noting that the training had prepared them to become resourceful managers, entrepreneurs, and contributors to national development.

“As you transition into civilian life, I urge you to carry forward the discipline, courage, and commitment that defined your careers. These values will serve as pillars of strength and will inspire your communities,” Air Marshal Abubarkar said.

Reflecting on the enduring legacy of the military, he referenced the popular adage, “Soja come, soja go, but barracks remain,” emphasizing that while individual service members may leave, their impact and values continue to shape the armed forces and the nation.

NAFRC Commandant, Air Vice Marshal Bashir Mamman, highlighted the institution’s achievements and its role in preparing over 51,000 personnel for post-service life. He noted plans to enhance the centre’s vocational and management training programs in the coming year.

The retirees were urged not to fear the uncertainties of civilian life but to leverage their training and discipline to excel in their new roles. “With God on your side, you will enjoy a bright and prosperous future filled with good health and sound mind,” Abubarkar added.
