Metropolitan Police officer Craig Carter has confessed to misconduct in public office following his theft of £115 from the wallet of Claudio Gaetani, a man who died suddenly after collapsing. Carter, 51, took the money between September 7 and 14, 2022.
Appearing at Wood Green Crown Court in north London, Carter admitted to receiving the stolen cash as evidence. Judge Daniel Fugallo indicated that an immediate custodial sentence is likely, though a pre-sentence report has been ordered and Carter has been granted unconditional bail until his sentencing on September 13.
Carter, who is currently suspended from duty, worked for the Met’s North Area Command Unit covering Enfield and Haringey. Tetteh Turkson of the Crown Prosecution Service criticized Carter’s actions as not only disturbing but also deeply disrespectful to the victim’s family. Carter’s guilty plea followed collaborative efforts between the CPS and Metropolitan Police Service.
