The Nigerian Twitter (X) community in the United Kingdom has been thrown into turmoil following mass resignations among its leadership amid allegations of financial mismanagement.
Benjamin Kuti, popularly known as Oluomo of Derby and the president of the group, announced his resignation on Thursday after facing mounting criticism over the administration of the group’s finances. The online community, boasting over 75,000 members across the UK, frequently organizes offline meetings and celebrations.
Other key figures, including DHK Rullah and Idris Ayinde, also stepped down from their roles. In a statement on X, Kuti admitted to shortcomings in transparency and accountability, saying, “I take full responsibility for the turn of events over the years and the current unsettling state of the community.”
Financial records revealed a sharp increase in expenditure from £9,440.41 in 2023 to £68,224.11 in 2024, raising concerns among members. Some leaders have since restricted their X accounts, while others, like Rullah, have pledged to refund money received.
Despite the resignations, many members remain dissatisfied, demanding further accountability and explanations regarding the community’s financial records.
