Manchester United have named 39-year-old Ruben Amorim as their new head coach. The Portuguese manager, who joins from Sporting Lisbon, will officially take charge at Old Trafford on 11 November with a contract extending until June 2027.
Amorim succeeds Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed on Monday, becoming the club’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. Former United forward Ruud van Nistelrooy, appointed as interim coach, will continue to lead the team for the next three games.
In an official statement, Manchester United described Amorim as “one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.” Sporting Lisbon confirmed that United met Amorim’s €10 million (£8.3 million) release clause to secure his services.
Amorim’s first match as United’s head coach is scheduled for 24 November against Ipswich, following the international break. He will debut at Old Trafford four days later in a Europa League clash against Bodo/Glimt, with his first Premier League home fixture against Everton shortly afterward.
