A middle-aged man was electrocuted while attempting to steal electrical cables and other equipment from the powerhouse of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at Lagos airport.
The incident occurred as the man, whose identity remains unknown, began disconnecting installations that supply power to the airport.
FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, confirmed the incident on Monday, stating, “We had an incident where an individual actually went into our powerhouse and he got electrocuted.” She emphasized FAAN’s commitment to tightening security measures to prevent unauthorized access to airport facilities.
Speaking at the commissioning of 30 Special Forces designated to secure Lagos airport, Kuku highlighted ongoing security challenges and the need for robust defenses. She noted, “Our environment is quite unique in the sense that we do have some security issues nationwide. We’ve been quite lucky within the airport environments that we haven’t had any of those major incidents. We do have individual issues.”
Kuku acknowledged the need for a comprehensive approach to security, adding that FAAN is addressing gaps that allow unauthorized persons to breach airport security. “Across the airside, you’ve seen where we have people who are either crossing our fence or trying to steal our airfield lighting equipment or potentially even harm some of the individuals that we have on-site,” she said.
Regarding the newly commissioned Special Forces, Kuku stressed their role in maintaining safety and security at the airport. “You have been specially selected to be part of this unit. This is a special unit. Hopefully, there won’t be any need to use your arms, but rather to leverage this as a deterrent,” she advised.
She highlighted the extensive investment in the new security apparatus, including training, arms, and ammunition. “We’ve been looking forward to the unveiling of this security unit for the past six months, dealing with conversations about funding, and the aviation security staff being armed,” Kuku explained.
Kuku also urged the new security personnel to work closely with other security agencies, stating, “This is an environment that we want to keep safe and secure. There have also been all sorts of activities that we need to put some pressure on.”
Expressing confidence in the new team, she remarked, “I’m happy that within FAAN, we now have this select unit. And we can’t wait to see how you perform in your duties and your tasks.”
The FAAN MD concluded by emphasizing the broader anti-corruption and anti-illicit activity initiatives across Nigerian airports. “Today marks a remarkable day in our journey, and we expect you to make us proud. We’re counting on you and be rest assured that you also have our support,” she assured the new security forces.
