Governor Seyi Makinde has clarified that his administration is not against the operation of a Sharia Panel in Oyo State, Nigeria, emphasizing that any initiative aligned with the Nigerian Constitution will not be opposed.
Makinde’s statement follows reports suggesting that the state government planned to challenge the implementation of the Sharia Panel in court. Speaking at the 2025 Iftar Programme organized by the Oyo State Government, the governor stated that citizens were free to engage with the panel if they wished, viewing it as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism.
“My position is that we will support anything that is in our Constitution,” Makinde said. “Even in our families, not every issue is taken to court; elders often settle disputes. If the Sharia Panel serves as an alternative dispute resolution, it is okay. It will help the government and reduce the burden on the courts.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to religious harmony and warned against individuals seeking to exploit religious differences for political gain. According to the governor, his administration prioritizes long-term development over election-driven distractions.
“As we move towards the next election, some will try to cause division for political reasons,” he added. “But our focus remains on the next generation, ensuring sustainable development for the people of Oyo State.”
Makinde also expressed appreciation to the Muslim community, legislators, judiciary, and security agencies for their support in maintaining peace and progress in the state. He urged citizens to uphold unity and resist attempts to sow discord.
