The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) has announced the epic Hausa-language film Mai Martaba as Nigeria’s contender for the International Feature Film category at the upcoming 97th Academy Awards.

Directed and produced by Prince Daniel, the film delves into themes of power, love, greed, and betrayal in an ancient African kingdom, weaving a story that challenges conventions and highlights the strength of female leadership.

NOSC Chairperson and acclaimed actress Stephanie Linus shared, “We selected Mai Martaba not only for its compelling narrative on inclusive leadership but also for its visual artistry and technical brilliance.” Other committee members include Dr. Victor Okhai, President of the Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN), celebrated actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, and film producer Emem Isong, among others. With the highest votes from the 15-member committee, Mai Martaba stands as Nigeria’s official submission for consideration by the Academy’s International Feature Film Executive Committee.

Set in Daura, Katsina State, the film brings to life the once-thriving trade in an ancient kingdom torn by an intense power struggle within the Agadashawa ruling clan. The film’s appeal has extended internationally, as it was recently featured in the prestigious Septimius Awards in Amsterdam.

The Oscars ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 2, 2025, broadcast to audiences in over 200 territories globally, where Mai Martaba aims to showcase Nigeria’s storytelling on an international stage.
