The Akwa Ibom State Police Command in Nigeria has confirmed a fire outbreak at the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) office in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.
The incident occurred as the state prepared for ongoing local government elections.
ASP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, October 5, 2024 that the fire did not destroy the election materials stored at the office. “Some hoodlums partly torched the AKISIEC office in Ibiono Ibom, but election materials remained intact, and the election is still ongoing,” she stated.
In response, the police have strengthened security measures across all AKISIEC offices and key locations in the state to ensure a smooth election process.
