Nigeria’s football community is in mourning following the death of former Super Eagles captain and coach Christian Chukwu, who passed away this morning at age 74. The sad news was announced by his longtime teammate and fellow football legend Dr. Segun Odegbami.
Career Highlights of a National Hero
Chukwu, affectionately called “Chairman” by admirers, anchored Nigeria’s defense during its golden football era:
- Captained the 1980 AFCON-winning squad (Nigeria’s first continental title)
- Managed the Super Eagles from 2003-2005
- Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) honoree
- Played for Enugu Rangers during their 1970s dominance
Odegbami’s emotional statement described Chukwu as “my bosom friend” and “one of our greatest football minds.” Teammate Emmanuel Okala (MON) who broke the news, recalled their unbeaten run in the 1976-77 African Cup Winners’ Cup.
Current Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro tweeted: “We stand on the shoulders of giants like Chairman. His legacy lives in every Nigerian jersey.”
Family sources confirm the ex-defender had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness in Enugu. The Nigeria Football Federation has announced plans for a state-assisted burial, with President Tinubu expected to posthumously honor the sports icon.
Chukwu is survived by his wife Nkechi and three children. The football community will observe a minute’s silence at all NPFL matches this weekend.
