Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was impeached today by the Lagos State House of Assembly amidst corruption allegations, as initially reported by Podium News.
The impeachment paved the way for Deputy Speaker Lasbat Meranda to assume the role, marking a historic moment as the first woman to serve as Speaker in Lagos Assembly’s history. The position had previously been held by seven men, starting with Oladosu Oshinowo in 1979.
Mrs. Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, first joined the Assembly in 2015, the same year Mr. Obasa was elected Speaker. Currently in her third term, she has maintained a reputation as a loyal member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Born on August 16, 1980, in Lagos, Mrs. Meranda attended Randle Primary School and Anglican Girls Grammar School before earning degrees from Lagos State University and the University of Lagos. Before her legislative career, she worked as a political aide in Apapa Local Government Area and managed an oil and gas business.
Her appointment is seen as a significant milestone, as she takes the helm during a critical period for the Lagos Assembly, with calls for increased transparency and accountability.
