In a decisive move to uphold environmental standards, the Lagos State Government has issued a 14-day ultimatum to property owners in Sangotedo and Ago Palace Way, Isolo, directing them to remove buildings constructed on drainage channels or face demolition. This announcement underscores the government’s commitment to restoring order and combating environmental degradation across the state.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, affirmed the government’s stance during an inspection tour of various sites notorious for environmental violations. These include Sangotedo, Lekki, Isolo’s Ago Palace Way, and Ikoyi areas. Wahab emphasized the necessity of enforcing existing laws without compromise, highlighting the dangers of unchecked environmental abuse.

“Lagos will no longer tolerate environmental indiscipline,” Wahab stated firmly. “We are determined to enforce all regulations, regardless of whose interests are affected. As a coastal state with unique challenges like low-lying terrains and high population density, Lagos has implemented various measures to sustain its viability.”

The directive targets structures that obstruct drainage systems, posing significant risks during periods of heavy rainfall and exacerbating flood vulnerability. Violators have been served with initial contravention notices, with a follow-up of 48 hours for immediate compliance and a subsequent 14-day abatement period before enforcement actions commence.

“We urge voluntary compliance within the stipulated timeframe,” Wahab continued. “Failure to adhere will result in necessary enforcement measures to restore environmental integrity.”

This proactive initiative aligns with broader efforts by Lagos State to mitigate climate impacts and enhance resilience against environmental hazards. As the government intensifies drainage enforcement activities, it aims to foster a culture of responsible environmental stewardship among residents, underscoring the interconnectedness of environmental preservation and public health.

As the enforcement phase approaches, stakeholders and affected parties are urged to cooperate fully to safeguard communal safety and environmental sustainability in Lagos State.
