The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, carried out a demolition of 138 illegal shanties along the canal in Ajao Estate, Lagos.
The structures, which were being rented at rates ranging from N60,000 to N100,000, were demolished as part of ongoing efforts to combat environmental infractions and unauthorized settlements in public spaces.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, shared the update on his X handle on Friday. He revealed that the occupants of the demolished structures had been paying substantial rents despite the illegal nature of the encampments. The demolition, which occurred on Baale Shekoni Street in the Oshodi/Isolo area, was accompanied by a video showing officials dismantling the structures while the occupants removed their belongings.
The operation is in line with the state government’s efforts to restore order and ensure compliance with environmental regulations in Lagos.
