The Lagos State House of Assembly has announced plans to investigate its former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, over allegations of fraud and financial misappropriation.
The decision comes after Obasa was impeached on January 13 by more than two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly over alleged misconduct and financial offences.
Speaking on the planned probe, the Assembly’s spokesperson, Olukayode Ogundipe, revealed that the investigation would commence once Obasa resumes his duties as a lawmaker.
“There are other things we’ve been hearing about, including different amounts of money being spent by him. When he’s seated with us, actions will be taken,” Ogundipe said in an interview.
He also hinted that the probe could be conducted through a special committee or directly by the Assembly’s leadership, ensuring the process follows constitutional procedures.
Despite his impeachment, Obasa has rejected the allegations, calling them baseless and his removal unconstitutional.
“I remain the authentic Speaker,” Obasa insisted, claiming that the procedure used to oust him was flawed.
However, Ogundipe dismissed these claims, maintaining that the Assembly acted within the law.
“The process of his removal was constitutional. The members knew what we saw, and we intended to change the guard,” he asserted.
While Obasa remains a member of the Assembly, the extent of the probe will depend on his return. This could lead to: an internal inquiry within the House, or a formal petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.
As the controversy unfolds, the Lagos Assembly is poised to address the financial allegations that led to Obasa’s dramatic impeachment.
