The Lagos State House of Assembly has suspended its plenary indefinitely following a security breach at the assembly complex on Monday, February 17, 2025.

Reports indicate that police vans were stationed at the entrance of the assembly after security personnel, allegedly from the Department of State Services (DSS), entered the premises and locked the Deputy Speaker’s office before the plenary session began.

The unexpected action led to a standoff between lawmakers and security officials. However, the lawmakers later regained access to the assembly chambers.

Leadership Crisis Intensifies

The security breach comes amid growing political tensions in the assembly. Speaker Mojisola Meranda, who became the first female Speaker of the Lagos legislature on January 13, 2025, following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa, has been facing internal challenges.

During the disrupted plenary session, the lawmakers debated the incident and passed a vote of confidence in Speaker Meranda.

They also resolved to investigate the breach and report their findings to President Bola Tinubu and the DSS Director General, Oluwatosin Ajayi.

The Lagos Assembly Clerk has since clarified that the DSS was invited to maintain order rather than to seal offices, but tensions remain high.
