The Labour Party (LP) has suspended Senator Kelvin Chukwu, who represents Enugu East Senatorial Zone, citing allegations of anti-party activities and insubordination.
The decision, made by the party’s Amurri Ward executives, was communicated through a letter signed by Comrade Chika Okoh on behalf of the ward’s executive council. The letter was addressed to the Enugu State Chairman of the Labour Party via the Local Government Chairman.
The suspension, which is set for 90 days, was based on Senator Chukwu’s alleged refusal to comply with party principles and failure to respond to several invitations to discuss the accusations against him.
The letter, released to journalists on Sunday, stated:
“We, the members of the Executive Council of the Labour Party, Amurri Ward, Nkanu West LGA, hereby formally notify you, Distinguished Senator Kelvin Chukwu, of your suspension from the Labour Party for a period of 90 days, effective from the date of this notification, and/or the date of your receipt of this notice.
“This resolution has been passed as a result of your acts of insubordination to the leadership of the party, your involvement in anti-party activities, and your failure to adhere to the party’s principles.”
The letter further noted that Senator Chukwu had failed to take advantage of opportunities to defend himself, stating,
“You have failed to avail yourself of the opportunity to be heard, despite several requests made to you in this regard.”
The Labour Party executives assured Senator Chukwu that he could invoke the party’s constitutional provisions to challenge the suspension if he wished.
