Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the Presidential Candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, has clarified that he did not influence the reinstatement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II as Emir of Kano.

Kwankwaso had previously crowned Sanusi as Emir in 2014, but Abdullahi Ganduje, who succeeded Kwankwaso, dethroned the monarch in 2020.

After the NNPP won the 2023 governorship election, Kwankwaso had stated that Sanusi’s dethronement would be reviewed. On Thursday, the Kano House of Assembly repealed the Emirate Council Law, paving the way for Sanusi’s reinstatement.

Kwankwaso explained that he will visit Kano soon to discuss the matter with the assembly members, the speaker, and the Governor. He emphasized that his role is to offer advice and support, rather than dictate actions.

Kwankwaso also clarified that his previous statement about reviewing Sanusi’s dethronement meant investigating whether the action was taken in good faith or as an act of vendetta.

Regarding the future of the emirate and political influence, Kwankwaso noted that those concerned about tenure-based appointments have a valid point.

However, he emphasized that his administration did not dethrone the late Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, despite their political differences, demonstrating respect for traditional institutions.
