A lawyer representing suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused the Kogi State Government of masterminding efforts to recall the lawmaker from the Senate.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, Victor Giwa alleged that Governor Usman Ododo’s administration is behind the recall process, using his aide, Charity Omole, to lead the campaign.
On Monday, March 24, Omole, who serves as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Women and Youths, led a group of constituents to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to submit a petition demanding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recall.
Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended from the Senate for six months following a dispute over seat arrangements with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The senator had accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office before the suspension.
Giwa dismissed the recall attempt as politically motivated, alleging that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State is using it as a tool against Akpoti-Uduaghan, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“The truth of the matter is that there is no way the recall process can go through except it is done fraudulently,” Giwa said, emphasizing that the process involves multiple stages and is nearly impossible without political interference.
He further argued that the recall campaign is not based on the senator’s performance but is a retaliation for her allegations against Akpabio.
“In this case, the lady that led the protest is the senior special assistant to the governor of Kogi State on women and youths. You will see that this is a government-sponsored recall,” he added.
As of the time of this report, the Kogi State Government has not responded to the allegations.
